PRESCHOOL - AGE 3-5

Preschool
As children transition into the "big kids" room they encounter a larger area filled with games and activites to entertain them. We balance group activites with individual skill building in our open floor plan.
Shapes, textures, puzzles, crafts, numbers and letters are prominent in many of our education stations.

Music
Singing and dancing is also an enjoyable activity for the children and our staff. We have an annual Christmas concert for all the children.

Behaviour
When the time comes to intervene, we use a series of steps in behaviour management:
1. Positive reinforcement.
2. Proximity, use of voice and eye contact
3. Reminder of limits and reasons for them.
4. Redirect undesirable behaviour.
5. Encourage verbal conflict-resolution.
6. Engage in problem solving with the child suggestion solutions.
7. Offer choices of acceptable alternatives to the misbehaviour.
8. Explain the logical and natural consequences of the behaviour continuing.
9. Limit use of the area of equipment.
10. Verbally ask the child to sit away from the group and in eyesight of the teacher. If the
child refuses. State “on your own or with my help.” Count 1, 2, 3 if the child does not
move by the end of the three, pick the child up and move to the desired eyesight area. The
child may choose to tell the teacher when he is ready to rejoin the group.
11. Before readmitting the child to the area of group, briefly remind the child of why the
situation occurred and appropriate ways to handle it should it arise again.
12. Give the child the opportunity to try again with warm encouragement.
13. Inform parent’s daily of any problem behaviour.
14. Request a parent teacher conference to discuss unresolved behaviour conflicts.
15. Refer the child and family and staff to an alternative professional source of assistance
(NSCCRP,play therapy, counseling, etc.)
16. Problem behaviour, which cannot be corrected or dealt with at the Centre after having
exhausted all the preceding, will result in the parent(s) being asked to withdraw their
child.
